Specifying industrial electrical material without surprises

Megh Shah, Vimal Electric Corporation 7 min read

Short answer

Most delays we see are not price problems. They are a rating written down loosely, or a lead time nobody asked about until the schedule was fixed.

Write the rating, not the item

The single most common cause of a re-order is a BOQ line that reads like a shopping list. "MCB 32 A" does not say which curve, which breaking capacity, or which range. A C-curve and a D-curve behave differently behind a motor, and 6 kA and 10 kA are different products at different prices. Put the make, the range, the rating, the breaking capacity and the standard on the line and most of the back-and-forth disappears.

Ask about lead time before the schedule is fixed

Fast-moving material is held at both counters and usually goes out the same day: wire and cable, MCBs and MCCBs, distribution boards, industrial LED. Anything built to a rating is not held, because it does not exist until someone specifies it. Servo stabilizers and 3-phase online UPS are in that second group.

The order this goes wrong in is almost always the same. The schedule is agreed, then the material is enquired, then the lead time turns out to be the constraint.

Match the product to the room, not the catalogue photo

Ambient temperature, dust and humidity decide more than the spec sheet suggests. A cable sized for a 30 degree godown is not sized for a 45 degree dye-house on the same connected load. An air-cooled stabilizer in a dusty room becomes a maintenance item. Tell us the room and we will say if the obvious choice is the wrong one.

Buy genuine, from an authorised partner

An authorised channel partner matters for two things that only show up later: the manufacturer honours its warranty without an argument about where the product came from, and replacements are the same part rather than an approximate match. Warranty claims and repairs go to the brand's own authorised service centre. We are authorised for Legrand, Havells, RR Kabel, Bajaj Electricals, Fuji Electric and V-Guard, and we have been trading here since 2002.

Counterfeit wire and switchgear does circulate in this market. If a price looks unusual, that is usually why.

What to send us

A load list or a single-line diagram is enough to start. Where you have one, the BOQ. If you only have a photo of the nameplate on the thing that failed, send that; it is often faster than a description.

Questions we get asked
What should a BOQ line actually say?

Make, range, rating, breaking capacity where it applies, and the standard you are working to. "MCB 32 A" leaves the curve and the kA open, and those change both price and availability.

How far ahead should I ask about lead time?

Before the schedule is fixed, not after. Fast-moving switchgear, wire and lighting go out the same day. Anything built to a rating does not.

Do you supply against a drawing?

Yes. Send the single-line diagram or the load list on WhatsApp and we come back with what is held, what is built, and how long each takes.
