A contactor is an electrically operated switch that controls power delivery but provides no built-in motor protection. A motor starter combines a contactor with an overload relay to provide both switching and motor protection. Motor starters are mandatory for motors under electrical codes, offer greater safety and reduce downtime on your production floor.
Voltage dips occur when supply voltage drops below 90% for a few cycles, and are the leading cause of production interruptions in Vapi industrial estates. Shared distribution transformers, heavy motor starts and system faults create voltage sags lasting milliseconds to 20 cycles. Properly rated switchgear with earth fault protection and integrated soft starters or capacitor banks suppresses transients at source and keeps voltage within acceptable limits.
ACBs handle very high currents up to 6300A in main switchgear. MCCBs protect sub-distribution and branch circuits up to 1600A. Selection depends on load current, prospective fault level and breaking capacity. Thermal and magnetic trip elements must match load type and starting currents.
Indian Standards require MCBs to be selected by breaking capacity (4.5–25 kA), tripping curve type (B, C or D), pole count, and rated current. Breaking capacity must exceed the prospective short-circuit current at the installation point. Rated current must protect the cable, not the load. Pole configuration must match system earthing and isolation needs.
